Gillian Van Treese, Senior Lecturer in UW-Waukesha’s English Department received the 2017 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching by an Instructional Academic Staff Member. The prestigious award
was presented at the UW Colleges’ Convocation ceremony held at UW Fox Valley, where faculty from across the state had gathered for the start of a new academic year.
The Senate Teaching Awards Committee commended Ms. Van Treese for her excellence as an instructor. It was also noted that her students recognize that the experience they have with Ms. Van Treese as their English instructor is exceptional, citing her outstanding commitment to support of their learning. They understand that her approach is innovative and effective, and they appreciate their growth as writers.
Ms. Van Treese’s colleagues praise her for her contributions to the developmental writing program and to the first-year composition program, and are enthusiastic about the materials she developed for the entire department to use.
Ms. Van Treese is actively engaged in national organizations where she presents evidence in support of effective strategies for teaching college-level writing and reading. She also serves the students on her campus by coordinating the campus placement test reading, and by representing her students and department on the campus Retention and Academic Success committee.
