Beginning American Sign Language

Instructor, Debb Boness
This class introduces the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) which is used by the Deaf community. It includes basic vocabulary, syntax, fingerspelling and grammatical non-manual signals. You will develop gestural skills as a foundation for ASL enhancement and will leave with an appreciation and a cultural knowledge of the Deaf community. No previous knowledge of ASL is required. Textbook required.

Intermediate American Sign Language

Enhance your current ASL skills learned in Beginning ASL. Develop new vocabulary and conversational strategies used by the Deaf community. Pre-requisite: Beginning ASL or consent of instructor. Textbook required.

Spanish for the Health Care Professional

Instructor, Cecilia Rodriguez, emerita professor
This course is designed for beginning Spanish learners in the health professions (e.g. physicians, assistants, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, social workers, etc.) focusing on health care vocabulary and situations.  We will practice basic skills and discuss cultural knowledge needed to function in a Spanish-speaking health-care environment.

Cecilia RodriguezMeet your Instructor!

Emerita Professor Cecilia Rodriguez earned her PhD from the University of Kansas and is a retired professor of Spanish at UW-Waukesha. In addition to teaching, for more than 25 years she has worked as a translator for health agencies at state and local levels. She has experience teaching several levels of Spanish, is a MHD medical translator, and enjoys teaching Spanish to elementary students, police departments, health care and business professionals, and travelers.

 

Spanish for the Business Professional

This course is designed for beginning Spanish learners in the business professions that need a broad understanding of Spanish culture. We will cover basic vocabulary in dealing with customers in the Spanish speaking countries. Discussions will include the culture and customs of Latin American and Spain regarding business terminology and their own standards for doing business.

Mandarin Chinese for Beginners and Business Professionals – Part II

Italian for Travelers
