Frequently-asked questions about Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service that allows UW-WAUKESHA
FACULTY, STAFF, and STUDENTS to borrow materials not owned by the
UW-Waukesha library from another library. You may request books and
audiovisuals within the UW-System directly from the Web Catalog of
books by using the "place request" button found along the top banner
of the catalog. Unverified request for books, audiovisuals and
journal articles should be made through ILLiad. After November 2003
the Interlibrary Loan department will no longer be able to process
requests submitted in paper or through email.
Who can use interlibrary loan?
UW-Waukesha extends interlibrary loan privileges to all UW-Waukesha
students, faculty, and staff.
What types of materials can I request through interlibrary loan?
Requests can be made for books, journal articles, ERIC documents,
dissertations, pamphlets, audiotapes, compact discs, and video recordings.
Generally, we are unable to obtain rare books and reference materials.
How long does it take?
The time that it takes an interlibrary loan item to arrive at the
UW-Waukesha library varies. Generally it takes about 1 week.
How will I be notified that my materials have arrived?
Faculty and staff will be notified via campus mail. Students will
be notified by campus email. Materials can be picked-up at the
library's circulation desk. A desk attendant will ask to see your
UW-Waukesha ID before releasing any Interlibrary Loan materials.
How long can I keep my materials?
While the lending library determines the loan period, most books
can be checked-out for four weeks. Audiovisual materials are
generally checked-out for a shorter period of time and may even
be restricted to library use only. A fine of one dollar a
day is accessed for materials returned after the due date.
Where do I return my interlibrary loan materials?
Photocopies do not have to be returned. Books and audiovisual
materials must be returned to the library associate at the
circulation desk.
What if I need something immediately?
A librarian can check a number of different databases and let you
know if an item is available locally. If it is, you can use
your local library card to obtain materials from the local public
libraries and your UW-Waukesha I.D. to check-out materials from Carroll
College and WCTC. If the item you need is available at another
UW library you can use you UW-Waukesha I.D. as a library card at that
institution. If the item is not held locally, we may be able
to issue an INFOPASS. The INFOPASS allows you to checkout up
to three items from another participating library.
Universal Borrowing is a free service that allows UW-Waukesha students,
faculty, and staff to request books and audiovisuals not owned by
the UW-Waukesha campus from another UW-System library via the Web
Catalog. To request a book or audiovisual from a 2 year
campus, look up the item in the
Colleges Web Catalog
and use the "place request" button found along the top banner of the
catalog. To request a book or audiovisual from a 4 year campus, use
the "more catalogs" button found along the top banner of the
Colleges Web Catalog and choose all Universal Borrowing
Libraries or a specific UW-System library.
How do I make a Universal Borrowing Request?
For instructions on making UB requests, read
The
Resources of the UW System Libraries.
ILLiad is an electronic system that allows students, faculty and staff
to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. In addition to
requesting materials, ILLiad also allows users to track, edit, and
view the history of their requests. Prior to using ILLiad, please
check the Web Catalog to see if a UW-System library owns
the book or audiovisual you need. If so, the Universal Borrowing
system should be used. If not, or if your request is for a journal
article, fill out the ILLiad interlibrary loan request form
and submit the request. Your request will be sent to the
Interlibrary Loan office to be processed.
How do I make a request using ILLiad?
ILLiad
accounts have been set-up for all UW-Waukesha students and faculty.
You will be prompted to enter you 10 digit ISO number, this is your
UW-Waukesha ID number, and your last name. Please complete the
remainder of the form as accurately as possible.
