WAUKESHA –The fifth annual Jazz Summit on Thursday, April 13, leads off the spring roster of musical events at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha campus, 1500 N. University Dr. Additional events include the third annual Jazz and Poetry Jam on April 14, a choral concert of spring music on May 5, and the annual Symphonic Band concert on May 6. All are free and open to the public.The Summit features the UW-Waukesha Jazz Ensemble and special guests The Jazz Express Big Band. Directed by Craig Hurst, the Ensemble will be performing music by John Coltrane, Benny Golson, Herbie Hancock, and Horace Silver The 19-piece big band, under the direction of Mark Helgert, will play a variety of original compositions for jazz big band as well as some known favorites. It all starts at 7:00 p.m. and takes place in the Commons dining room.The third annual Jazz and Poetry Jam on Friday, April 14, begins at 7:30 p.m. Also held in the dining room on campus, it includes live music and poetry readings by students, faculty, and guests from the community.
Both the Friday choral and Saturday Symphonic Band concerts start at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in the Fine Arts Center on campus. Brian McLinden directs the choral singers, and Craig Hurst directs the band.
