High Schoolers Can Enjoy 'Precollege Experience'

WAUKESHA - Again this summer, the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha is offering a two-week Precollege Experience for students entering 9th, 10th, or 11th  grades. It introduces students to college life and gives them an opportunity to hone their academic skills. The program runs from July 10 through 21, with sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. Enrollment is limited to 20 students.

University faculty and staff will present introductory mini courses in areas such as math, engineering, biology, chemistry, computers, writing, and art. Students will engage in hands-on learning exercises, go on field trips, and get acquainted with a university campus. University staff will introduce them to college life, and they will be encouraged to explore future career options. On the last day, there will be a picnic and awards ceremony for both students and their families.

The program is open to students with a grade point average of 1.5 or higher, and applications will be accepted until it is filled. The $300 per student fee covers tuition, supplies, activities, and a T-shirt. However, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) provides full scholarships to students of color (Hispanic, African American, Asian American, Native American).

Transportation will be provided from schools in Waukesha, and special arrangements can be made for students from districts outside Waukesha.

For more information, contact Kristine Kane, Education Opportunity Advisor, at (262) 521-5502.
