Artist Draws from Past Travels, Eclectic Present

WAUKESHA – An associate professor of art, Franklin Zetzman has chosen a variety of his work to show in the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibit will open November 6 and remain mounted through December 14. Admission is free, and the public is invited. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 2:00-4:00 p.m. and during special events. Viewing arrangements also can be made by phoning University Relations at (262) 521-5445.

“I am an object-maker,” Zetzman proclaims, and notably one who employs a sense of awe for the natural world and whimsy in depicting it. He attributes the wide variation in the kinds of artwork he produces to his other profession, teaching: “I teach sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and art history classes, so I have to be knowledgeable in many techniques and materials,” he says. He applies the techniques and materials to his vision of his surroundings, toying with the concept of weightlessness and surreal impressions of very real objects, such as peach pits and pigs’ teeth.

A graduate of UW-Eau Claire with a master of fine arts degree from UW-Madison, Zetzman, who has been teaching at UW-Fox Valley since 1988, took a sabbatical leave in Nepal in 1997-98. He gave university lectures, studied North Indian classical music, did wax sculptures cast in copper and brass, and worked on a group of cityscapes in pastel. These experiences he brings back in his work, along with the culture he absorbed as he and his family traveled in the region.

His recent work also is represented in the UW System sculpture faculty art show, being held at UW-Whitewater in October-November 2000. He and his wife, Lynn, a textile artist who also has exhibited at UW-Waukesha, had a two-person show at the Appleton Art Center in July 1999.
