| WAUKESHA – Judy Katzung, who has managed the bookstore at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha for 18 years, will retire February 2. Replacing her, Trudy Barnes, an alumna of the campus, started January 22. Already quite familiar with the operation, Barnes worked in the bookstore while a student at UW-Waukesha as well as while she was completing her degree at UW-Whitewater.
Within a year and a half after Katzung, a book lover, accepted a part-time position at the close-to-home UW-Waukesha bookstore in 1978, she became manager. Barnes & Noble acquired the operation 15 years ago, and Katzung stayed with the company and experienced new opportunities to grow and learn.
After her retirement, she will continue to work for the company “as needed” helping to open new Barnes & Noble college bookstores in the region. Other time she will devote to bettering her golf game, traveling, and spending with her children and grandchildren.
Barnes attended UW-Waukesha from January 1996 until she earned her associate degree in May 1998. While a student on the campus, she joined Phi Theta Kappa national honor society and served as a mentor for TRIO program students, a writing tutor in the Study Center, and a student assistant in University Relations. She earned a BA in sociology with an emphasis on criminal justice from UW-Whitewater last semester. In spring 2000 she performed an internship under Katzung in the bookstore. Barnes has 11 earlier years’ experience working in various retail establishments, not to mention student jobs in the bookstore on campus. Barnes glides easily into her noble new position.
Katzung lives with her husband, Rick, in Waukesha. Barnes is a resident of Whitewater. |
