| WAUKESHA – The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha this spring will host the second annual Mathematics for Elementary Teachers (MET II) Conference. Designed to tune college professors from around the state into the best ways to prepare elementary teachers to meet the challenges in teaching math in their classrooms, the conference will address: “How can we prepare elementary teachers to teach for their students’ future rather than our past?”
Supported in part by a UW System Discipline-Based Consortial Grant, and by the UW Colleges Department of Mathematics and UW-Waukesha, the conference will be held at the UW-Waukesha campus Friday evening, March 9, and Saturday, March 10.
Special guest speaker, Hung-Hsi Wu from the University of California-Berkeley, will speak Saturday at 1:30 on “Impaired vision: The case of inadequate mathematical input in mathematics education.” Active in the field of mathematics education, from elementary to graduate school levels, Dr. Wu has written discerning papers on education standards and reform. Other topics to be covered during the conference are the use of teaching software, Geometer’s Sketchpad and Cabrii, and of spreadsheets and multimedia in mathematics instruction. Presenters from UW-Milwaukee and Edgewood College, Madison, will lead discussions on their research and revision projects aimed at improving the curriculum.
