FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 16 Deadline For Scholarship Application

WAUKESHA -- In addition to financial aid based on need, the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha each year offers a number of scholarships based on ability.  Administered by the Friends & Alumni of UWW, Inc., these scholarships, talent awards, and minority incentive grants are available to entering or continuing students who will attend UW-Waukesha either part- or full-time next fall.

Applications are available from UW-Waukesha's Student Services office, from area high school guidance offices, and at the campus Web site at waukesha.uwc.edu/stud/scholarship. To be considered for a scholarship, students must submit a completed application, along with two letters of recommendation, by March 16.

In academic year 2000-2001 almost $44,000 was provided in scholarship and grant awards. Individual scholarships can be applied to tuition, books, or other education-related expenses. One of the UW Colleges campuses, UW-Waukesha offers the lowest college tuition in the state.

Criteria for eligibility vary from scholarship to scholarship.  Some are awarded for performance talent in music or theater.  Others are for students who intend to pursue a career in a particular area.  A few require residence in Waukesha County.  The most prestigious one, the Friends Scholar Award, is the highest scholarship award and is given for up to four semesters to students who has graduated in the top five percent of their Waukesha County high school classes.

In general, students must complete the application essay, demonstrating achievements in addition to those proven by their academic records.  A committee consisting of four faculty and staff, two students, and three members of the Friends & Alumni make the award decisions.  They look for leadership or career potential in their review of the written application and the student’s past activities.

Award letters are mailed in the spring.

For more information about the UW-Waukesha scholarship program or to obtain an application, phone Judy Becker at (262) 521-5200.
