| WAUKESHA – Initiated last summer, the College English for Bilingual Students program at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha to help high school students “knock down language barriers” will run this summer Monday-Friday from August 6 –24. Students entering grades 9 through 12 have the opportunity to study English as a second language in a university learning environment.
Open to students who do not speak English as a native language, classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday with an additional two and half hours on Wednesday afternoons. They will be taught English through content areas in introductory mini-courses in such subjects as engineering, biology, chemistry, computers, writing, and art. In addition, they will participate in English enrichment activities, take fieldtrips, and develop college English portfolios using Internet research and word processing skills.
Enrollment is limited to 15 to insure individualized attention. Participants will have access to university staff and facilities and be given the chance to explore career and educational options. Applications will be accepted until the program is full, with a priority application date of May 14.
The program fee of $445 covers tuition, supplies, activities, and a College English for Bilingual Students t-shirt. However, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) offers scholarships to cover the fee to Wisconsin students of color (Hispanic/Latino, Asian-American, Native American, or African-American).
Transportation will be provided from Waukesha schools. Special arrangements may be available for groups from schools districts outside of Waukesha.
