WAUKESHA – One of America’s premiere African dance companies, Ko-Thi will give a presentation at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Tuesday, April 10, at noon on the Hub stage in the Commons, 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha. They will demonstrate and explain the cultural background of their art. The public is welcome, and there is no charge for admission.
Ko Thi was founded in 1969 by Ferne Yangyeitie Caulker, a native of Sierra Leone, West Africa. The name comes from the Shebro language of Sierra Leone and means “to go black,” as to search and look for African culture throughout the diaspora.
The dance company has been taking its sampling of African culture to schools since 1972 and each year performs for more than 50,000 students. It thus fulfills its mission of teaching art as an essential part of life.
Part of the campus Visions & Expressions series designed to enrich the collegiate experience for students at UW-Waukesha, the presentation is sponsored by the campus University Convocations Committee. |
