WAUKESHA –The Physics Department at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha is bringing back its egg drop contest, open to children from kindergarten through high school who live in Milwaukee or Waukesha County. On Wednesday, May 2, at 11:00 a.m. they will start dropping their raw eggs from four stories up on the roof of Northview Hall on campus at 1500 N. University Dr.
The idea is to design and construct some kind of packaging that will keep the eggs from cracking when the egg-filled containers hit the ground. The lightest packages in which the eggs survive unbroken will win. Six prizes of from $15 to $30 will be awarded. Contestants should bring their packages to the Physics Department on the upper level of Northview Hall before 10:00 a.m. on the day of the contest for weighing.
Organized by Joseph Otu, the contest will be judged by physics faculty members Otu and Margaret Malay; Luis Rodriguez from the engineering department; emeritus physics professor Morris Wickliffe, and UW-Waukesha physics and engineering students.
“Previous drops have shown that the egg drop contest is a useful learning experience and a fun activity, “ Otu said. “Students put into practice their knowledge of science and have a chance to compete with other students. They also get to visit a university environment.”
