Spectacular Firing of Wood Kiln Starts Today
| WAUKESHA – For the 6th time since it was built in 1997, the wood-fired kiln located at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Field Station will be called into action. The fire will be started in the 450-cubic-foot kiln on Wednesday, April 18, and, with continual stoking, reach its greatest intensity, exceeding 2400 degrees Fahrenheit, by Saturday.
Jeff Noska from the UW-Waukesha art department and Christopher Davis-Benavides from the UW-Milwaukee art department will oversee the project, just as they did the building of the kiln. The spring firing includes ceramic work by both of them and by their students. They invite the public to view this process with the most spectacular viewing time occurring Saturday (April 21) afternoon and evening. The UW-Waukesha kiln, the only one of its kind in the UW System, was modeled after the ancient Japanese Anagama kiln. Each one is unique and requires the development of individual techniques for successful firing. Ceramics fired in such kilns are marked by distinctive and intriguing ash glazes.
The Field Station is located at 1234 South Waterville Road, Oconomowoc, just south of Hwy. 18.
