WAUKESHA University of Wisconsin-Waukesha student Kari Garon, Waukesha, won a Peoples Choice award in the seventh annual Zoological Society of Milwaukee Animal Art Competition sponsored by the Robert K. and Joyce R. Cope Foundation. This year the competition focused on endangered animals. One of 157 entries, Garons Lazy Eye, a mixed media painting of rhinoceroses, appeared in a juried show displayed at Mayfair Mall this spring. Eight of the works, all produced by high school and college students enrolled in art courses, were selected as winners. Six received $100 Peoples Choice awards, based on voting by the public, and two earned $50 Jurors Choice awards.
In addition to receiving the monetary honor, Garons work has been published in the April issue of Alive, the Zoological Societys membership magazine, and she has been given a one-year free membership in the society.
Works by two other art students, Christine Miller, Delafield, and Nick Zubek, New Berlin, were chosen by a Lakefront Festival of the Arts jury to be shown at the festival this June in the Collegiate Competition exhibit. Students from area institutions, including Alverno, Cardinal Stritch, Carroll, Concordia, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Mount Mary, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Waukesha, and Wisconsin Lutheran, were invited to participate, and only 50 pieces were selected for the prestigious, public showing. |
