New Scholarship Recognizes Founding Faculty

WAUKESHA – A new University of Wisconsin-Waukesha scholarship has been established to honor its founding faculty, who were here when the doors of the local campus opened in fall 1966. The Founding Faculty Scholarship recognizes those who set the high standards for those who follow. In particular, it honors French professor Sara Toenes, Waukesha, the last member of that cohort continuously teaching here.

She set the criteria for the scholarship eligibility: The award will be given to an entering student in the upper 10 percent of his or her class and be available to both full-time and part-time students. The first award will be granted for fall 2002.

At this time the fund stands at $1300.00. The Friends & Alumni of UWW, Inc., gladly will accept additional contributions to this worthy commemorative. Please make checks payable to UW-Waukesha and send them to the University Relations Office, 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha, WI 53188-2799.

Members of that elite group of original faculty and academic staff include:

  • R.V. Allenstein, Chemistry
  • Stanton Boyer, Chemistry

During her 35 (and counting) years here, Toenes has done so much for the campus both administratively and academically. At an all-staff convocation, UW-Waukesha Dean Brad Stewart counted off examples of her contributions. She:

  • chaired the Foreign Language Department 1971-1973 and again from 1992 to 1996
  • organized the foreign film series and probably attended every showing since it started
  • developed several new courses, including the currently running Images of French, 1914-1945, featuring 14 films on French life and culture;
  • requested and received a Technology Opportunity Grant for a distance education course offered by compressed video: French 203/204
  • organized summer tours for many years to various European countries, providing cultural opportunities for our students and the community
  • performed emergency translations for area businesses throughout the years including one in the pre-FAX machine era for which she had to spell each word over the phone because pronunciation was impossible.
  • served as the original volunteer coordinator for the Faculty Advising Program, which began in 1980. She is still an advisor. Without her early efforts, no such program would exist.

With this semester, Toenes leaves the full-time teaching faculty but will continue to teach part-time.
