Poetry People Extend Lessons to Performance

WAUKESHA – A group of word lovers who all have taken a course in writing poetry at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha have organized themselves into a performance troupe. These Poetry People will perform at UW-Waukesha Wednesday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons Room 101.

The presentation is part of the Visions & Expressions series sponsored by the University Convocations Committee and is open to the public at no charge.

Having experienced success at their first two public appearances, at the Harry Schwartz Bookshop, the ensemble now returns to the site of its union. Comprised of 10 to 12 poets at any given time, the otherwise diverse group shares a common experience in poetry workshops taught during the 1990’s by Phil Zweifel, associate professor of English and associate dean at UW-Waukesha. The poets range in age and background from young mother to retired professor, and many are members of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets.

Following an introduction by Zweifel, each will read two poems at the performance Wednesday.

Among those expected to participate are:

  • Paula B. Anderson, a published poet who lives in Wales;
  • Barbara Bache-Wiig, a speech and language pathologist and grandmother who lives in Waukesha;
  • Shirley A. Blanchard, an environmentalist and author who lives in Wales;
  • E. Clark Bowerman, a lover of the English language who lives in Dousman;
  • Nancy Gregersen, a nature, words, music, and ideas enthusiast who lives in Waukesha;
  • Kathy Grieger, an award-winning writer who has returned to poetry. She lives in Menomonee Falls;
  • Ramon Klitzke, a retired law professor and published poet who lives in Waukesha;
  • Robert Kokan, a published poet who lives in Ottawa;
  • John Peterson, a semi-retired accountant who has resumed poetry writing after a 30-year hiatus. He lives in New Berlin;
  • Katy Phillips, a former teacher who enjoys writing about seasons, celebrations, and family. She lives in Waukesha.
  • Betty Irene Priebe, an art student, spare-time poet, widow, retired librarian, and grandmother who lives in Waukesha;
  • Ann Strong creates crafts and poems documenting her life’s journey. She lives in Pewaukee.
