Lecture Series Takes International Focus

WAUKESHA – Both students and faculty will participate in the spring semester 50 Minutes Lecture Series at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha. The program provides a forum for members of the university community to present material from their research, special interest, or other intellectual inquiry. The presentations are at noon in the Commons Conference Room 101. Admission is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, February 20, Salah Bassiouni will review “The Sociology of Islam.” An associate professor of anthropology and sociology, Bassiouni is a naturalized US citizen, a native of Egypt, and an expert on the Middle East.

A week later, on Wednesday, February 27, faculty members Jane Crisler and Tim Booth, who led a class in on-site exploration of historical Italian art and architecture in January, will hold a discussion, titled “Arrivederci, Italia,” with student participants. Crisler, an associate professor of history, and Booth, who teaches art, developed this inaugural for-credit travel program at UW-Waukesha.

On Tuesday, March 12, six months after the September 11 attack on America, Ken Glaudell will assess “New Friends, New Foes, New Focus: America and South/Central Asia after 9/11.” A senior lecturer in political science, Glaudell has studied Arabic and Urdu, spent research time in several countries in the Middle East, and wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Afghanistan and the influence of Shi’ism on Islamic political thought.

The 50 Minutes Lecture series is sponsored by the University Convocations Committee at UW-Waukesha.
