WAUKESHA On Thursday, February 21, the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha will observe National TRIO Day by celebrating the success of students who have participated in the Student Support Services program administered at the campus.
The UW-Waukesha fourth annual TRIO celebration will begin at noon in the Commons lounge. Along with honored students, several Congresspersons and the states US Senators have been invited to attend. UW-Waukesha Dean Brad Stewart, UW Colleges Chancellor Bill Messner, a representative from Senator Feingolds office, and Study Center Director Janet Brown all will speak. Refreshments will be served.
Established by Congress in 1965 and funded through the Department of Education (DOE), the TRIO programs originally three in number aim at bringing disadvantaged Americans into the mainstream of higher education. Since then, TRIO programs now seven of them have served millions of Americans.
For the past 22 years, the UW-Waukesha Study Center (formerly known as the Learning Lab) has administered a TRIO Student Support Services program. With continuing federal support, the program provides qualifying students with personalized academic advising, career counseling, personal counseling and referrals, assistance with financial aid, and academic support in math, writing, reading, and study skills.
To qualify for Student Support Services, students must be low-income (eligible for federal financial aid) or first-generation college students (parents are not college graduates) or have special needs because of physical or learning disability.
At the ceremony, students and alumni of the program who have enjoyed success through it are honored individually. This year, the following will receive awards.
