WAUKESHA Sweeping the highest honors in the Eastern Division of the Wisconsin Athletic Conference (WCC), University of Wisconsin-Waukesha basketball coaches Jack Hervert and Neal Nelson were chosen by their peers as Coach of the Year for womens and mens basketball, respectively, and players Andy Kieck, Waukesha, and Amy Kujawa, Delafield, were elected Player of the Year on mens and womens sides, respectively.
In addition, both Andy Kieck and Matt Poytinger, Waukesha, were named to the mens first team all conference, and Amy Kujawa and Susie Deprey, Milwaukee, made first team all conference for the women. Joe Stocks, Waukesha, was chosen for second team all conference. Angela Scherrer, Milwaukee, Angela Palesse, Waukesha, and Carrie Ferris, Westfield, all received honorable mention in the coaches poll.
The UW-Waukesha Cougars also won the Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association (WJCAA) championships with players Susie Deprey, Angela Scherrer, and Megan Heritsch, all from Milwaukee, being named to the womens All Tournament team and Andy Kieck, Matt Poytinger, and Joe Stocks to the mens.
While this is Nelsons 10th WCC Coach of the Year honor, it is Herverts first, and well deserved. The honor is very humbling and much appreciated to be recognized by ones peers, Nelson commented.
The womens team won the WCC conference title, while the men fell to the UW-Marathon Huskies, 60-64. |
