UW-Waukesha ‘Diversity Week’ Recognizes Cultures, Lifestyles

WAUKESHA – The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha student Diversity Club, joined by other campus clubs, this year has organized a week of events to celebrate the differences amidst similarity in the student body and the world. All the events are open to the public at no charge.
Capped by Diversity Club’s annual Gathering of Cultures on Friday, April 12, the events include:

Monday, April 8: Presentation by Iranian student, Nasreen Ameri, speaking at noon in the Commons Conference Room 101.

Tuesday, April 9: The Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transvestite, and Straight (LGBTS) organization will sponsor a video, History Lessons, to be shown at noon in the small dining room (off the main dining area). The video explores homophobia.

Wednesday, April 10: Members of OLLA (Organización de Líderes Latino Americanos) will conduct lessons in salsa dancing at noon on the Hub stage in the dining room.

Friday, April 12: Diversity Club will hold its annual Gathering of Cultures, featuring free ethnic foods and entertainment from 6:30 to 11:00 p.m. in the dining area.

The Celtic band Frogwater will entertain from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., followed by Middle Eastern dancers from 8:00 to 8:30. There will be games and contests from 8:30 to 9:00 p.m. and a performance by Ballet Folklorica at 9:00. The jazz group Rutabaga Blue will take the stage from 9:45 to 10:45 p.m. During the evening, Diversity Club will sponsor a raffle to raise money for scholarships including prizes of passes to Discovery World, tickets to the Boulevard Theater, and passes for the art museum, among others.

Monday, April 15: The Collegiate Association of Women will show a documentary video, Fat, which looks at issues of weight discrimination and self-image. Screening is at noon in the Commons Conference Room 101.

Tuesday, April 16: Sponsored by the American Indian Cultural Association, two former students will hold a discussion on “Plains Indians: Differences and Similarities.” Lorne Draskovic is from the Lakota Nation and Brad Kroupa from the Arikara. Draskovic attends UW-Milwaukee, and Kroupa is transferring from the University of North Dakota to UW-Milwaukee in 2002. They will be in the Commons Conference Room 101 at noon.

All the participating organizations are student clubs at the freshman/sophomore campus of the University of Wisconsin in Waukesha. The public is invited to join the students in celebrating diversity.
