Humpty Dumpty’s Dilemma

WAUKESHA –The Physics Department at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha once again will hold its egg drop contest, open to children from kindergarten through high school. On Saturday, May 4, at 10:30 a.m. they will start dropping their raw eggs from the roof of the 3-story Northview Hall on campus at 1500 N. University Dr.

The idea is to design and construct some kind of packaging that will keep the eggs from cracking when the egg-filled containers hit the ground. The lightest packages in which the eggs survive unbroken will win. Additional judging criteria include creativity in package design and landing spot closest to the target.

Elementary, middle, and high school projects will be judged separately, with first ($20), second ($15) and third ($10) place prizes to be awarded in each of the three age groups.

Contestants should bring their packages to the Physics lab on the upper level of Northview Hall for weigh in, preferably between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. May 2 or May 3. Last-minute drop-off times will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on May 4.

“Previous drops have shown that the egg drop contest is a useful learning experience and a fun activity, “ claims event organizer, UW-Waukesha physics professor Joseph Otu “Students put into practice their knowledge of science and have a chance to compete with other students. They also get to visit a university environment.”

For information about the contest, phone Dr. Joseph Otu at (262) 521-5298.
