WAUKESHA Three University of Wisconsin-Waukesha students enrolled in a Mathematics for Elementary Teachers class volunteered to tutor at-risk students who were failing math at Waukesha Central Middle School this semester.
Sandy Gavin, Sussex, worked with the children on Saturdays, and Julie Schirpke, New Berlin, and Tonya Esser, Hartland, went there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The college students received neither extra credit in their class nor monetary reward for their efforts.
The middle school teachers report that the tutored pupils grades rose from Fs to As and Bs and that their attitudes in class improved.
Associate professor of math, Shubhangi Stalder, who taught the course, and Anna San Diego, a counselor in Student Services, coordinated the program for UW-Waukesha. Linda Kain was the teacher liaison at the middle school. Both Stalder and San Diego also assisted with the tutoring.
UW-Waukesha, with the largest enrollment among the 13 campuses that comprise the UW Colleges, offers freshman and sophomore liberal arts courses to prepare students to transfer and complete their bachelors degrees at four-year institutions.
