UW-Waukesha Stages ‘Steel Magnolias’ This July

WAUKESHA – The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha again this year will stage a summer theater production. Performances of Steel Magnolias will be on Fridays and Saturdays, July 19, 20, 26, and 27, at 8:00 p.m. in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, located in the Fine Arts Building on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.
Written by Robert Harling, the story of six Southern women, beautifully flowering magnolias with the strength of steel, takes place in the town of Chinquapin, Louisiana, with most of the important action generated in Truvy’s Beauty Salon. The beauty dispensed often comes in the form of current advice or long-term wisdom. The award-winning off-Broadway play was made into a blockbuster movie, with performances by some of Hollywood’s brightest stars.

Director Jeff Smerz has chosen an extremely talented cast for the UW-Waukesha production:

Deborah Lazaga, Glendale, who plays Truvy, is a traffic reporter and DJ on WKTI radio.

Laurel Freeman, Milwaukee, portrays Annelle. She is a former UW-Waukesha student who had roles in several recent campus productions.

Carol Dolphin, Waukesha, is Clairee. Retired from the UW-Waukesha Communication and Theatre Arts faculty, she had directed the theater program for three years and regularly appears in theater productions throughout the metropolitan area.

Brittani Ebert, Milwaukee, plays Shelby. She is a member of the UW-Milwaukee Professional Theater Training Program.

Christine Horgen, Wauwatosa, here portrays M’Lynn. She has had acting roles with the Sunset Playhouse, Waukesha Civic Theater, Whitefish Bay Players, and many other local theater groups.

Lee Sitron, Waukesha, is Ouiser. An alumna of UW-Waukesha, she appeared in last fall’s production of the all-woman Talking With and is a veteran of many area theaters.

Ticket prices are $7.00 for adult general admission and $6.00 for students or senior citizens. They are available by phoning (262) 521-5445 or can be purchased at the door. The box office opens an hour before each performance.
