Artists Break Surface of Depths

WAUKESHA – Local artists Kristine Gunther and Philip Krejcarek, Dousman, will exhibit work in mixed media at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Fine Arts Center gallery November 25 through December 27. Displaying Gunther’s two-dimensional drawings and Krejcarek’s photographs, the pair calls their show, “Shallow and Deep.”

Located in the Fine Arts Center on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., the gallery is open to the public at no charge. To view the work, phone (262) 521-5445.

Gunther concentrates on the present but incorporates its subtleties. “I work in the presence of my subject,” she says, yet fancying “the abstractions of movement, line, tone, and color. I engage their powers in the service of my vision.” Doing this, she attempts to transcend the two-dimensional model. She paints what she knows: family, animal friends, and the Kettle Moraine area in which she lives.

Her husband, Krejcarek, a professor of art at Carroll College, builds scenes, recollecting childhood playsets from Sears. He plays with color and characters as he arranges the pieces of the sets he has created, and then photographs them. “Although the product of my work is done using natural color photography, the steps in which I get there are interdisciplinary in nature. It is theatrical in concept and sculptural in execution,” he explains.

Besides exhibiting at Wisconsin universities, he has shown in Missouri, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. His work is included in the permanent collections of several local museums and exhibitors and by the Denver Art Museum, and he sells it through David Barnett Gallery, Milwaukee.
