WAUKESHA On December 7, students at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha presented research papers that they had prepared in collaboration with their professors. Sixteen students worked with 12 faculty members in doing the research and writing of the papers for the faculty-student research symposium.
A panel of three faculty who did not have students participating in the symposium judged the papers. First, second and third place winners and four honorable mention papers received monetary prizes. An additional honorable mention carried no monetary award.
First place honors and $100 went to Lucas Carrao, Pewaukee, who worked with assistant professor of political science Margaret Hirschberg, Waukesha, on The Power of Efficacy: A Comparison of Mass and Elite Personal and Political Efficacy.
The second-place prize of $75 was awarded to Katie Schmitt, Hartland, a student of psychology professor Bob Bermant, also of Hartland, and author of a paper on Spatial Skills: A Spiders Web.
Three students of associate professor of history Jane Crisler, Waukesha, won third place and $50 for their paper, Architecture and Political Power: Kings, Palaces and Politics. The students are Nicholas Albers, Menomonee Falls; Megan Johnson, Waukesha; and Gabrielle Ziehr, West Bend.
Four papers received honorable mention along with a $25 prize:
Adam Machajewski, Milwaukee, a student of associate professor of physics Joseph Otu, Waukesha, and author of Analyzing Solar Motions and Phenomena.
Dustin Koehler, Hartland, and Kelley McDougall, Pewaukee, for their paper, Parental Involvement and Childrens Behavior. They are students of associate professor of sociology Salah Bassiouni, Waukesha.
Lisa Eligon and Kiara Sturdevant, both of New Berlin, who researched and wrote, Bridging Greed with Middle Class America. They worked with business professor Carol Fischer, Oconomowoc.
Rebecca Weber, Wales, dramaturg for the fall semester theater production who wrote, Dramaturging the Holocaust: Pre-Production Work on And Then They Came for Me. She was guided by Mark Lococo, Bay View, theater director and associate professor of communication & theatre arts.
Finally, Rich Kokott, Muskego received honorable mention without a financial reward for writing a research paper on The Fitness Detention. He is a student of Jack Hervert, Milwaukee, assistant professor of physical education.
Phil Zweifel, Waukesha, associate professor of English and associate dean; Jane Ewens, Hartland, professor of psychology; and Ron Gulotta, Franklin, assistant professor of sociology, served as judges and based their decisions on the written work, not the presentations. |
