WAUKESHA The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha opens its fine arts season with an exhibit celebrating 30 years of Title IX and extolling the partnership of men and women in the work place. Collaboratively assembled, the exhibit has been touring the state for the past year and will be on display in the library at UW-Waukesha, 1500 N. University Dr., from August 27 through September 15.
From Pathbreakers to Partners: Wisconsin Women and Men Learning and Working Together features images and stories of Wisconsin women and men training and working in nontraditional careers. It represents a joint effort by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the University of Wisconsin System, and the Wisconsin Technical College System Board.
Library hours, when the exhibit can be viewed, are 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fridays, and closed holidays and weekends.
The 1972 Title IX barred sex discrimination against students and employees of federally-funded educational institutions. Since then, womens and girls activities have been more equitably funded, especially in athletics, and a wider variety of such activities have been opened to them. Women have made inroads into professions traditionally held chiefly by men. For example, in 1970 they earned fewer than 10 percent of law degrees but by 1996 they received 44 percent of them. Similarly, they have moved into other professions, and they now comprise 56 percent of the college undergraduate population.
The exhibition at UW-Waukesha is sponsored by the University Convocations Committee as part of its Visions & Expressions series for fall 2003.
The largest of the 13 University of Wisconsin Colleges, UW-Waukesha offers a freshman-sophomore transfer curriculum and ready access to the UW System to citizens of Wisconsin.
