Dawley has spent more than 10 years researching the Anabaptists, including Amish, Mennonites, Hutterites, and Brethren, traveling to communities throughout Canada, in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky as well as studying 29 settlements in Wisconsin. He wrote and self-published a book, Amish in Wisconsin, which is an anecdotal journal of his experiences visiting the Amish.
Retired in 1990 after 31 years of teaching and counseling in the Milwaukee Public Schools, Dawley holds a masters degree in guidance and counseling from UW-Milwaukee and devotes himself now to advocating for the Amish. He leads group tours to Amish settlements in Wisconsin and gives slide-assisted presentations on the people and their way of life. He also teaches sociology courses at Milwaukee Area Technical College and conducts adult education classes at UW-Waukesha and UW-Fond du Lac and hold sessions at a number of senior citizen centers.
