WAUKESHSA Like the people of Mexico, students at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha will celebrate Dias de Los Muertos with a special Fiesta para La Comunidad on Friday, November 7, from 6:00-10:30 p.m. in the Commons on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha. Admission is free, and free Hispanic food will be served. The public is welcome.
Dias de los muertos, or days of the dead, commemorates the deceased, who, according to ancient lore, come back to visit with their living relatives once a year. Deceased children are remembered on All Saints Day, November 1, and adults on All Souls Day, November 2. In Mexico, the people take food, drink, flowers and valuable items to the grave sites of their loved ones, and light candles there to guide their spirits back home. Then the family celebrates for several days.
The students of the campus Organización de Lideres Latino Americanos (OLLA) also will celebrate and invite the community to join with them.
The evenings entertainment includes music by Mexican trio Los Jinetes, dance lessons by Carols Pizarro, and a DJ spinning Latin music from 8:30-10:30 p.m. For additional fun, there will be a piñata, salsa recipe contest, jalapeño eating contest, and raffle, with proceeds going to the OLLA scholarship fund for Latino students.
