WAUKESHA The University of Wisconsin-Waukeshas three studio artists will exhibit some of their recent work beginning the weekend of November 14-15 through December 22. It will be on display in the Fine Arts Center Gallery on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.. Admission is free, and the public is welcome. To arrange a viewing, call (262) 521-5445.
Professor of art Stephanie Copoulos-Selle will display paintings; assistant professor Jeff Noska is showing wood-fired ceramic sculpture and vessels; and assistant professor Barbara Reinhart will exhibit wood-fired ceramic sculpture. The artists are planning a reception near the closing date of the exhibition but have not completed arrangements.
In her paintings, Copoulos-Selle depicts images on differing planes of existence, with animate characters aware only of their own activity and the viewer aware of much more. The subjects are shown from different perspectives as well, such as flat, linear, or illusionistic. With masks or costumes, she philosophically separates objective truth from perception and belief, and drops in words as a kind of musical background to lend enjoyment.
Noska groups shapes and forms that are related to both traditional pottery and architecture. He is interested in the interface between clay and the wood firing process, deliberately limiting his use of clays, slips, and glazes to take advantage of flame and ash.
Making something of the doodler in her, Reinhart has gone from merely drawing on paper to embedding it in clay. Inspired by 20th century Italian artist Giacomo Manzu, she has made the process her own, enjoying the gestural mark-making in a surface that has depth, physical recordings of texture and process, and the backwards/forwards directions of adding/removing material. She employs her methods using human, animal or other organic figures, viewing them in relationship to their surrounding space.
