WAUKESHA The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Fine Arts Center Gallery has on display a reprise of photographic work by former art faculty member Mary Ellen Young, who died in 1994. Young, who earned her bachelors degree in painting and masters in art history, turned to the camera as her preferred instrument for creating art.
Gallery hours for the exhibit, which runs through March 20, are 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Tuesdays. The gallery will be open during special events as well. To view the work at other times, phone University Relations, (262) 521-5445. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
Young was drawn to architectural models as well as people in relationship. She co-authored two books focused on architecture, Places of Worship Milwaukee (1977) and Downtown Milwaukee (1978) and helped curate the Milwaukee Humanities Programs bicentennial commemorative Milwaukee Self-Portrait: A Citys Family Album, a traveling exhibit featuring the people of the city. It served as the basis for two of her later photo collections, Families and Home.
Among the original UW-Waukesha faculty when the campus opened in 1966, Young earlier founded the art history department at UW-Milwaukee and chaired it for the first year.
The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha has the highest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore UW Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admissions, or financial aid, phone the campus at (262) 521-5200 or visit the Web site at waukesha.uwc.edu. |
