UW-Waukesha Student Groups Celebrate Diversity

WAUKESHA – The student Diversity Club at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha has planned a week of fun and education March 29-April 2, capped with the annual Gathering of Cultures Friday, April 2, from 6:00 to 10:30 p.m. All events will be held in or near the dining area in the Commons on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.

All week students will be selling tickets for a raffle, earning money to support a Diversity Club scholarship. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and prizes range from a boom box to restaurant certificates, from Milwaukee Bucks tickets to a DVD player, and more. Drawings will be held between events at the Gathering of Cultures Friday night.

On Tuesday, March 30, the Organization of Latin American Leaders (OLLA) is sponsoring a jalapeño-eating contest at noon.

On Wednesday, the African American Union (AAU) will invite student poets to read their work on stage at a noon event. The three judged the best will earn small monetary awards, provided by the University Convocations Committee.

Several students from African nations will describe their lives growing up in those far-away lands. Sponsored by Diversity Club and speaking at noon on Thursday, April 1, they will make their presentation from the stage in the dining room.

The Gathering of Cultures on Friday features free foods from many cultures, arts and crafts, five performance acts, and other participatory activities, including another jalapeño eating contest, piñata bash, and salsa dancing to music spun by a DJ.

Entertaining during the evening will be

  • 6:15 p.m. Korean dance troupe from Madison
  • 6:45 p.m. Sadiera/Ried Middle Eastern dancers
  • 7:30 p.m. Alma dancers, doing Mexican folk dancing, sponsored by OLLA
  • 8:15 p.m. Bright Minds dance team, sponsored by AAU
  • 9:00 p.m. Danube dancers, a German dance troupe
