WAUKESHA -- The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha, one of the 13 freshman/sophomore campuses of the University of Wisconsin Colleges, invites the public, along with faculty, staff and students, to attend a public hearing regarding proposed revisions to the UW Colleges mission statement. It will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, from 2- 3 p.m. in the Commons Room 103 on campus at 1500 N. University Dr.
The April 14 presentation and discussion will be carried through compressed video at UW-Waukesha, since people from the UW Colleges' 13 campus communities along with UW Regent Fred Mohs and staff from Madison will be participating. This public hearing is one step in a two-year process that will culminate with a presentation to the UW Board of Regents later this spring.
The newly revised mission statement is:
The University of Wisconsin Colleges is a multi-campus institution that prepares students for success at the baccalaureate level of education, provides the first two years of a liberal arts general education that is accessible and affordable, and advances the Wisconsin Idea by bringing the resources of the University to the people of the state and the communities that provide and support its campuses.
The UW Colleges started the process of revising its mission statement as part of a self-study requirement of a recent re-accreditation. At that time, various groups within the UW Colleges provided requested input. This resulted in a proposed revision that does not change the essential mission of the UW Colleges but reaffirms it. It states the mission in clearer terms, which better reflect the institution's priorities and visions for the future.
