The 2002 release runs for 3 hours and 45 minutes and is rated PG. Sara Toenes, a retired foreign language professor, will introduce the film.
Villagers in a remote province of India in 1893 had been paying a tax, or lagaan, to their maharajah, who in turn paid the local British garrison. When the tyrannical British commander decides to double the tax, the local hero, Bhuvan, agrees to a wager: If the villagers can beat the British in a cricket match, they will not have to pay the tax for three years. The match ensues.
Nominated for an Academy Award as best foreign film, Lagaan has been a box-office hit all over the world.
