WAUKESHA After leading the University of Wisconsin-Waukeshas mens tennis team to both state and conference championships, Neal Nelson, Waukesha, an associate professor of physical education and the campus athletic director, was chosen tennis Coach of the Year by the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference (WCC).
Scoring 24 points, the UW-Waukesha mens team swept the competition in all categories except No. 1 singles to win its sixth WCC title at the Moorland Racquet Club May 8. It was the most points weve ever scored at the conference tournament, Nelson said. It was a thrilling way to end the season. The team won 8 out of 9 categories the week before to capture its fifth Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association (WJCAA) championship.
Playing for the UW-Waukesha Cougars were:
Tom Vales, Brookfield, No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles
Corey Heller, Elkhorn, No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles
Karl Stonger, Waukesha, No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles
Jon Poletti, Delafield, No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles
Ben Hanson, Elkhorn, No. 5 singles and No. 1 doubles
Tom Splittgerber, Mukwonago, No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles
Nelson also coached the womens team, which placed fifth in WCC play and was led by freshman Sarnai Enkhturr, from Mongolia, who lost a close match in the semifinals at the No. 3 singles spot.
In addition to coaching tennis, Nelson is the head mens basketball coach and the golf coach at UW-Waukesha.
