WAUKESHA At its June meeting, the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents approved faculty promotions. Staff promotions at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha were awarded by UW Colleges Chancellor Bill Messner and announced by the campus executive officer, Dean Brad Stewart.
Tim Booth, Milwaukee, an associate lecturer in art who has been teaching at UW-Waukesha since 1995, has been promoted to lecturer. Booth specializes in art history and also has taught at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and at UW-Milwaukee. He holds bachelors and masters degrees from UW-Milwaukee and a professional certificate from Milwaukee Area Technical College.
Jane Cavanaugh, Brookfield, has been promoted from academic librarian to senior academic librarian. After completing a bachelors degree in elementary education from UW-Milwaukee, she immediately returned to its graduate school for a Master of Library Science and worked as a corporate librarian for two years before coming to UW-Waukesha in 1984.
An assistant professor of political science, Margaret Hankenson, Milwaukee, was promoted to associate professor and awarded tenure. She has been heading the political science department on campus since 1999. Hankenson earned a BFA in theater from Illinois Wesleyan University and both MA and PhD in political science from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, where she also taught. She was a visiting professor at Adams State College, Alamosa, CO, before coming to Waukesha.
Similarly, Alexei Krioukov, Whitefish Bay, was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor with tenure. After he earned his PhD in mathematics from the University of Minnesota, he spent one year teaching at West Chester University, PA, before coming to Wisconsin. He taught at UW-Manitowoc from 1998-2001 and then transferred to Waukesha. Both his bachelors and masters degrees in theoretical physics are from St. Petersburg State University in his native Russia.
Working part-time, Ann OHara, Waukesha, has been promoted from associate academic librarian to academic librarian. She started at UW-Waukesha in 1993. OHara graduated magna cum laude from Marquette University in 1983, completed her teaching certification in 1985, and earned an MLA from UW-Milwaukee in 1988. Previously she has done library work at the Waukesha Public and Burlington Public Libraries, at Dominican High School, St. Stephens grade school (Stevens Point, WI), and at the Golda Meir Library at UW-Milwaukee.
Jeff Smerz, West Allis, joined the staff at UW-Waukesha as the theater technician right after he graduated from UW-Stevens Point in 1995. He has been promoted from instructional specialist to senior instructional specialist. While in college, he worked in the theater and scene shop, performing a wide variety of functions. In addition to creating and building sets and managing lighting for UW-Waukesha theater events and productions, Smerz has been directing summer plays on campus for the past 5 years and has appeared in a regular-season production.
Promoted from lecturer to assistant professor, Tim Thering, Madison, started teaching at UW-Waukesha in 2000, the year before he received his PhD in American history from UW-Madison. He had taken his bachelors in history, political science and international relations and masters in American history from there as well and spent his junior year studying at Karl Marx University, Budapest, Hungary. He served as historical advisor for the Waukesha Public Librarys series on The Sixties last year and also has worked as a photo researcher and editorial assistant for the Wisconsin Magazine of History and copy editor for the book, A Wisconsin Journey. Thering taught at Carroll College in fall 2000.
Promotions are effective July 1, the start of the new fiscal year for the UW System.
