WAUKESHA Originally a conversational dialogue between visual and poetic artists all doing residencies at the Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest, Illinois, the Poetic Dialogue grew into a project. From this experience, visual artists created work in response to poetry by the writers, and together they began exhibiting at ARC Gallery in Chicago last March. The exhibit is on the move, though, and is on display at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha through November 14.
A range of work, including an installation, a video, photography, paintings, and sculpture, along with the poems they interpret, are being exhibited, some in the library and some in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. Admission to both sites is free.
The gallery will be open Mondays from 1:00 - 3:00 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays noon - 1:00 pm and Fridays 9:00 a.m. noon, or see the faculty secretary in Southview Hall Room 010. You also can make an appointment through University Relations, or visit during special events. The library is open Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. and Fridays 7:30 a.m-5:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, November 16, Beth Shadur, the artist who conceived this project, will speak at 1:00 p.m. in the Library. The public is welcome, and there is no charge.
Thirteen Chicago artists and six national poets, including UW-Waukesha professor of English Margaret Rozga, have contributed to the exhibit. Six additional visual artists, not included in the exhibit here, complete the Poetic Dialogue. It will be traveling to sites in Florida and other parts of Illinois as well.
ARC Gallery is a womens cooperative gallery that shows work by both members and invited guests. Shadur is a member. A panel of the poets and artists will participate in the Chicago Humanities Council conference, to be held at the Loyola University downtown Chicago campus November 6.
The group plans a new exhibit for next year, in which the poets will write in response to the visual arts.
