Lecture Series Features Jazz, Reason, Sharks, and Food

WAUKESHA – Each semester several members of the faculty and staff at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha present 50 Minute Lectures on their research or topic of interest. Four such presentations have been scheduled for spring 2005, all offered at noon in Conference Room 101, located in the Commons on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha. Admission is free, and the public is welcome.

Starting on a musical note, associate professor of music Craig Hurst, Waukesha, will report on his British tour with Waukesha’s Jazz Express Big Band. The trumpet-blowing educator will present “American Musician Jazzes Up London” on Thursday, February 10. They played at the Music of London Festival on December 29, at Kensington Hall and, on January 1, at the Bullshead Pub, a jazz club in London. He also will show photographs from his travels.

Assistant professor of philosophy Dean Kowalski, Waukesha, will examine “The Relationship between Faith and Reason” on Monday, March 7. Faith and reason are two independent realms, Kowalski contends, and he will try to explain how they are not opposed. He is the author of the recently-published, student-friendly textbook, Classic Questions and Contemporary Film: An Introduction to Philosophy (McGraw-Hill, 2004), in which he uses popular movies (The Matrix, Bruce Almighty, Minority Report) to introduce traditional philosophical issues.

On Tuesday, March 15, emeritus professor of history Blake McNulty, Waukesha, will show a self-made and -narrated video on his more exciting experience scuba diving in “Swimming with the Sharks.” Since retiring, he has pursued his hobby in some of the world’s most beautiful waters, where he goes to see what’s living below the surface.

Connecting the cultures of the world through the literature about their foods, assistant professor of English Ellyn Lem, Waukesha, will present “Drumbeats and Dinner Tables: Tracing African Influences in Southern Culture” on Tuesday, April 19. Assisting her both in the research and the presentation of this lecture is student Ashley Lane. Previously Lem has spoken about Jewish and Tex-Mex foods.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admissions, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5200 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
