UW-Waukesha Hosts ‘Saxo-Fest’

WAUKESHA – Saxophonists, music teachers, and students of the saxophone will gather at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha campus Saturday, February 12, to celebrate the instrument. Internationally known clinicians and performers will lecture, perform, and conduct sessions during the daylong workshop/clinic. The campus is located at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.

Among the presenters will be Jean-Marie Londeix from the Conservatoire National de Bordeaux and among the world’s most renowned saxophonists; William Street, a professor of music from Alberta, Canada, who has earned global respect as one of North America’s finest instrumentalists; James Kasprzyk, baritone saxophonist with the Chicago Saxophone Quartet; and Professor Steven Jordheim from the Lawrence Conservatory, Appleton, WI.

Primarily dedicated to concert saxophone performance and pedagogy, the program will devote some time to jazz performance as well.

The workshop is supported through a grant from Selmer and Cascio’s Interstate Music and the hosting facilities of UW-Waukesha. An all-day pass costs $25. Admission to individual sessions is $5, and there is a $10 fee to participate in the Master Class. For registration information, contact Larry Sheets at (262) 549-4025 or lsheets@execpc.com.

Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by three one-hour sessions: Teaching the Young Saxophonist; Concert Baritone Saxophone; and Performing in the Jazz Ensemble. After an hour break for lunch, the program resumes with saxophone choirs and then an hour-long lecture by Jean-Marie Londeix on the history of the saxophone at 2:00 p.m. There will be a two-hour master class and saxophone choir performance from 3:00-5:00 p.m. followed by a break for dinner. Saxophonist William Street and world-class pianist Roger Admiral, both from Alberta, Canada, will give a recital, performing the best of saxophone literature, in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre at 7:00 p.m.
