Foreign Film Series Features Works in Mandarin, Czech

WAUKESHA – The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha’s Foreign Film Series tilts East this semester, with original language films from the Orient and Eastern Europe. Each will be shown at 1:00 and 7:30 p.m. in Room 101 of the Commons, located on campus at 1500 N. University Dr. Admission is free, and the film will be introduced by a current or emeritus UW-Waukesha faculty member.

Produced in Mandarin but subtitled in English, The Road Home will be shown on Friday, February 18. Filmed in black and white, it was released in 1999 and is rated G. It runs 100 minutes.

In The Road Home, a young man returns to his native village after the death of his father, the village schoolteacher. The death occurred in a neighboring town, and the young man’s mother insists that the body be carried back on foot, in the belief that a body returned this way will never forget the road home. From this starting point the young man recounts the tale of his parents’ courtship, a love story unusual in a time of arranged marriages. Zhang Ziyi, who appeared in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, plays the role of the mother as a young girl.

The Czech-language Kolya will be shown with English subtitles on Friday, April 22. The 1996 color release is rated PG-13 and runs 105 minutes.

In 1988 a musician in Prague, who already is in trouble with the Communist government, agrees to go through a fake marriage so that a friend’s niece will not be sent back to Russia. But soon his new wife runs off to West Germany, leaving behind her five-year-old son Kolya, who speaks only Russian. This irreverent comedy won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe as best foreign language film.

The Foreign Film Series is one of the programs sponsored by the campus University Convocations Committee.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office or visit waukesha.uwc.edu.
