WAUKESHA After holding auditions in late January, University of Wisconsin-Waukesha theater director Mark Lococo, an associate professor of Communication & Theatre Arts, has selected a cast of eight performers to fill roles in the spring production of Oscar Wildes comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest. Performances are set for Fridays and Saturdays, April 1, 2, 8, and 9, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, April 3, at 2:00 p.m. in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre located in the Fine Arts Center on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.
Appearing in the production will be students:
- James Boylan, Hartford, as Algernon Moncrieff
- Emily Carlton, Milwaukee, as Miss Prism
- Robert Francis Curtis, West Allis, as Jack Worthing
- Chris Eckert, Brookfield, as Reverend Chasuble
- Paul Hart, Milwaukee, as Lane and Merriman
- *Kira Klein, Dousman, as Cecily Cardew
- Amanda Mueller, Waukesha, as Gwendolen Fairfax
- Heather-Marie Smith, Waukesha, as Lady Bracknell
While the entire cast is comprised of students, Kira Klein (marked with asterisk) is a high school senior, not a student at UW-Waukesha.
In addition, students Ken Martin, Brookfield, will serve as stage manager and Stephanie Sell, Hartland, as assistant director and assistant stage manager.
Jeff Smerz, UW-Waukesha Theater Manager, will do the technical direction and lighting design, and Neil Gregersen, who also teaches in the Communications & Theatre Arts department, is scenic designer
Written by Irish playwright Oscar Wilde in the late 19th century, The Importance of Being Earnest spoofs the morals of the time, especially the conventional preoccupations of Victorian respectabilitysocial position, income, and character. Imaginary companions allow two young men to step outside of their positions in society and find and pursue their loves. All the while the plot swirls around a complicating and ongoing debate about the nature of marriage and whether it is pleasant or unpleasant.
