WAUKESHA In celebration of Black History month, the University of Wisconsin-Waukeshas student African American Union (AAU) has invited a local artist to appear Thursday, February 24, on the Hub stage in the Commons on the campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.
The presentation is open to the public at no charge. Light refreshments will be served before the noon performance.
A young black artist trying to place his footprint in history, Adebisi Agoro writes and performs poetry and hip hop music. He uses art to define the black experience he has known or known about from Nigeria and southern cotton fields to urban Milwaukee and to promote a political reform that is advised by that experience.
He self-published his first book of poetry, A Psalm for the Ghetto, in early 2003, describing the coming of age of a black male, and recently released his first hip hop album, Street Scholar. He starred in the Theatre X production of Jazz, a play based on the Bronzeville Jazz settlement in Milwaukee in the 1930s-50s and this winter appeared in the comedy, Inspecting Carol, produced by the UW-Milwaukee Theatre Department.
Adebisi wants to revolutionize the entertainment industry and has formed a company, BLAX (Black Life and eXperience), of poets, actors, artists, organizers, and business people to do the work of realizing that vision.
This presentation is part of the campus Visions & Expressions series and is sponsored by the University Convocations Committee.
