WAUKESHA The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Handbell Choir will present the annual spring concert Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, located in the Fine Arts Center on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha. Admission is free, and the public is invited.
The program opens with the Jazz Ensemble performing three traditional Dixieland pieces, Alabama Jubilee, St. James Infirmary, and Down by the Riverside, followed by an original piece of their own, The Windy Hill Jazz Suite, which combines elements of jazz, fusion, and free jazz.
Next, the Handbell Choir will perform classical music, including The Swan, Bouree, and The Blue Danube Waltz. Bands director Craig Hurst will accompany the bells as solo flugelhorn in the Grand March.
The centerpiece of the performance by the Symphonic Band will be Gordon Jacobs Tribute to Canterbury, which is comprised of three contrasting movements, all based on the Lutheran chorale, Ein Feste Burg. Also featured is a piece evoking scenes of soaring birds in Visions of Flight by Robert Sheldon. The concert concludes with the Henry Fillmore classic march, Noble Men.
Associate professor of music Craig Hurst directs the bands, and music lecturer Nancy Van Brunt leads the handbells.
Instrumentalists include students, two faculty, and members of the community.
