WAUKESHA Kathryn (Katie) Zimpel, Milwaukee, had a pretty good year as a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha. She was invited to join Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year colleges, and then received the societys award as a Leader of Promise, which carries a $1000 scholarship to offset her expenses in 2005-06.
The 2004 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran High School is one of 30 students across the country chosen by PTK from among its members as Leaders of Promise. As a new inductee in the honor society, she was offered the opportunity to apply for the scholarship. She completed the questionnaire and wrote an essay, which earned her the honor. I was surprised, she admits, when she received word of her selection.
Zimpel, who expects to transfer to UW-Milwaukee after she finishes her associate degree at UW-Waukesha, wants to major in art. I came to UW-Waukesha first because it is cheaper, and the location is right, Zimpel says.
UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5200 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
