Public input sought on search for new UW chancellor

The UW Colleges, which are the 13 freshman/sophomore campuses, and the UW-Extension are interested in gathering input from people throughout the state as they embark on the cost-saving measure of hiring one chancellor.

With the UW Colleges in 13 locations statewide and the UW Extension with offices in all 72 Wisconsin counties, these institutions have been leaders in making higher education accessible to people of all walks of life throughout the state. As they hire one new chancellor to lead both institutions, they want state input to ensure they are continuing to meet the needs of state residents and taxpayers.

Residents, students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders are invited to make suggestions via email and during two statewide listening sessions on August 30 and September 20.

The listening sessions will be held noon to 1 p.m. at the following locations, where participants can engage in questions and answers via teleconference.

According to Lisa Seale, professor at UW-Marathon County and chair of the chancellor search committee, finding the right person to lead both institutions is critical.

“Because the Colleges and Extension represent a unique commitment to accessible higher education, public input will be invaluable in determining our priorities for hiring our next chancellor,” Seale said. “These listening sessions will allow people from around the state to contribute to the selection process.”

The search committee is seeking responses to four questions, as well as general input on the search process:

  • What are the distinct aspects/dimensions of the UW Colleges and UW-Extension? What is most distinctive about the new model of combined leadership?
  • What are the key challenges and opportunities facing the UW Colleges and UW-Extension over the next five to ten years?
  • What should be the priorities be for the next Chancellor?
  • Given your responses to all of the above, what are the values, characteristics, skills, and experiences we should be seeking in the new Chancellor?
