FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Journalist, Author to Speak at UW-Waukesha on War

WAUKESHA – Journalist Chris Hedges, who has written several books including War Is a Force that Gives Us Meaning, will give a Distinguished Lecturer presentation at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha on Wednesday, October 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, located in the Fine Arts Center on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.

The presentation is open to the public. All seating is general admission, and tickets are $5. Tickets not pre-sold will be available at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m. For ticket information, contact the campus ticket office at (262) 521-5212.

A foreign correspondent for nearly 20 years, Hedges has covered war around the globe. Through his education and experience, he has developed a love-hate relationship with his subject. Philosophically he is opposed but emotionally he is drawn to war. No matter how (un)justifiable the motivations for it, war often brings out the best in the combatants and exudes a narcotic effect. In Hedges’ analysis, “Human beings like to destroy,” and “War is necrophilia.”

This man who holds a BA in English literature from Colgate University and Master of Divinity from Harvard will attempt to explain how a human endeavor at once can be so ennobling and so toxic.

He has been a correspondent for The New York Times for the past 15 years and previously reported for The Dallas Morning News, National Public Radio, and The Christian Science Monitor. In 2002 he was part of a New York Times team that won the Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of global terrorism.

Sponsored by the University Convocations Committee, the Distinguished Lecturer Series brings personalities of renown to campus to enhance educational value for students and expand community resources.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5200 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
