Panel of US War Veterans Discusses Experience of Combat

WAUKESHA – US war veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the current conflicts will discuss their experience of war with students, faculty and staff at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha on Tuesday, November 8, just three days before the annual national celebration of Veterans Day. The noon presentation, part of the campus Visions & Expressions series, will be held in the student lounge in the Commons, on campus at 1500 N. University Dr.

The public is welcome, and there is no charge.

Veterans on the panel include:

  • Hy Pitt, Glendale, served in the Army Air Corps at a weather station in British Guiana (Guyana).
  • Dick Bahr, Ixonia, is among the “Frozen Chosin,” a Marine who survived one of the deadliest operations in Korea.
  • Joe Campbell, Wauwatosa, who trained in Army artillery and automotive maintenance, completed assignments in Vietnam and Germany
  • Vera Roddy, Milwaukee, did air med evacuations for the Air Force in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm and also participated in the Cold War.
  • Noah Smith, West Allis, has had duty with the Marines in the current conflicts and expects to return.

WTMJ radio personality Jonathon Green, also a veteran, will moderate the panel.

The panel discussion is presented in support of the 2005-06 campus read, in which faculty focus on a theme established through a common reading experience. The books that are a part of the common read this year are Chris Hedges’ War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning and Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5200 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
