Hall to Speak about ‘Buffalo Soldiers’

WAUKESHA – A Griot, or historical storyteller, at America’s Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee, Anthony Hall will speak at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha on Thursday, February 16, about “Buffalo Soldiers.” The 2:15 p.m. presentation, which will be held in the Commons Room 101, is open the public at no charge. The campus is located at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha.

After the Civil War, Congress designated two black cavalry army regiments and four black infantry. Within a year and a half, in 1867, the Cheyenne, who saw their wiry hair and ferocious fighting ability, likened these soldiers to “Wild Buffaloes.”  Later they became known as “Buffalo Soldiers.” Even as late as World War II, African-American soldiers kept that designation and proudly wore a buffalo patch on their sleeves.

Their stories are legendary, and Hall, who has been a community activist in Milwaukee, has steeped himself in the lore of African-Americans in this country. In the past, he served on the board of directors for the Congress for a Working America, as an organizer for Community Village, Ltd., for MICAH (Milwaukee Innercity Churches Allied for Hope), and for the Sherman Park Community Association and continues working with Project Return. He is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), America’s Black Holocaust Museum Founder’s Society, and the National Coalition of Black American Men.

The campus Lectures & Fine Arts Committee offers the presentation as part of its Visions & Expressions series.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5200 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
