WAUKESHA – The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha’s Service Learning Coordinator, Julia Bennker, an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer, has organized two April events offering insights and opportunities in service learning.
Bennker teamed up with the Interfaith Caregiving Network to organize a National Youth Service Day yard project on Saturday, April 22, National Arbor Day. Students from UW-Waukesha and 4th-6th graders from Meadowbrook School will gather at on campus and get fortified with donated foods before going to the homes of residents who have requested help with yard work. They’ll return at 2:00 p.m. PDQ Foodstores, Usinger’s Sausages, and Sentry Foods will supply free breakfast and lunch for the volunteers. Each of the students also will receive a thank-you gift certificate from Culver’s and other local businesses.
On Tuesday, April 25, Patrick Schmitt from the UW-Waukesha campus, Pamela Proulx-Curry of the Wisconsin Campus Compact, and Jim Masters from the United Way will present a lunch hour (noon-1:00 p.m.) brown-bag workshop in the Student Lounge. They’ll address connecting with our community, service learning projects, classroom connections, and the benefits of service learning. Representatives from White Rock and Saratoga Elementary Schools, the UW-Waukesha after-school tutoring program, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters also will be on hand to describe their experiences and their needs.
Bennker has been serving since last fall as the service learning coordinator at UW-Waukesha as part of a Wisconsin Campus Compact effort to reconnect universities with their communities.
