WAUKESHA – The manager of the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha bookstore, Jamie Starks will leave the approximately 2000-student campus to assume the management position at the bookstore of the much larger Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, NC. He departs May 25.
A native of Pell Lake, WI, Starks always has lived in the Lake Geneva area and will be moving out of state for the first time in his 33 years. He views the move as “a great opportunity, an adventure.” In addition, he hopes to visit some Civil War sites.
Fresh out of high school, Starks started college in 1990 at UW-Rock and then transferred to UW-Milwaukee. Although he didn’t finish a degree at the time, he has returned, enrolling at UW-Waukesha in the mid ‘90’s. He continued to work at various jobs, but a hunger for history kept him coming back. In 2002, when he was out of a job and once again attending UW-Waukesha, he applied for an advertised opening in the bookstore. That experience turned into a profession, as he was promoted from clerk to manager.
The same company that runs the campus bookstore here owns one in Charlotte, NC. Starks has been asked to manage an off-campus bookstore there, which serves the sprawling, 8-campus, urban community college with programs in high school completion, technical, and pre-baccalaureate studies.
With the move, Starks expects an interruption in his stockcar-racing hobby, something he originally picked up from his dad. Jamie worked on a crew for seven years before he got to drive last year for the first time. While he may have to shelve it for awhile, he definitely wants to stay involved.
The move hasn’t dampened his desire to finish his history degree, either, and he thinks his new home will lend itself to some historical field trips to enhance the educational experience.
“I think I’m going to like the weather,” he adds, even though he is leaving Wisconsin in late spring.
UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5200 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
