WAUKESHA – For the second year, University of Wisconsin-Waukesha summer theatre, directed by Jeff Smerz, is offering a play specifically for children age 10 and younger. A cast of UW-Waukesha students and former students will perform Little Red and the Hoods Monday-Friday, July 24-28 and July 31-August 4, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Updated from the traditional fairy tale, this version addresses a modern-day dilemma for children: how not to judge strangers by their looks while also protecting against those who might want to commit harm. It also emphasizes the importance of reading.
As the story goes, Little Red is taking cookies to her grandmother when she encounters Harry Wolf. Harry works for the notorious gang leader, Ma Sugar Lump, and wants to steal the recipe for the especially delicious cookies. The pack of meanies then can bake more cookies, sell them, and become rich. Alas, they can’t read the instructions, and their plot is foiled.
The ticket office opens an hour before each show, and seating begins 15 minutes before performances. Tickets are $3 each, and all seating is general admission. For ticket information, phone (262) 521-5212.
The cast of five includes four UW-Waukesha students and a former student. Appearing in the production are:
- James Boylan, Hartford, as Humphrey
- Meg Cyrulik, Waukesha, as Maggie
- Adam Gaulke, Wauwatosa, as Dr. Weazelbud
- Stephanie Sell, Hartland, as Stephanie Dooley
- Deborah Skidmore, Eagle, as Little Red
In addition, student Zosia Starosta, Waukesha, is doing the stage management, and former student Jessica Betts, Mukwonago, joins the stage crew.
Student Katie Zimpel, Milwaukee, created the artwork for the play.
